Techniques For Active Learning: What Are They and How Can I Use Them In My Health Economics Courses?

The Teaching Health Economics Special Interest Group (THE SIG) has organized a series of virtual workshops during 2022. The first workshop provided an overview of curriculum development and writing powerful learning outcomes for health economics courses. Details for the next upcoming virtual workshops are provided below. All interested in developing new courses or enhancing their own teaching skills are encouraged to participate.

The third in the Teaching Health Economics (THE) virtual workshop series will explore what active learning is, why it is important and provide an overview of a range of active learning techniques that can be used to enhance the learning experience in your courses. We will explore how to take learning outcomes, your students’ characteristics and your own experiences into account when deciding which techniques to use, and we will address some of the potential barriers to active learning. Some specific techniques, including active listening and writing-to-learn, will be discussed in more detail during the workshop. Participants will be encouraged to share their experiences with active learning techniques and engage with Jill and Femi around these issues.

Please note: there will be simultaneous translation into several different languages during the workshop, made possible by a grant from the IDRC
